Climbing in the Chiemgau used to mean (back then, when sport climbing was not yet invented): training for the right mountains on the Kampenwand and maybe on the Hörndlwand . These two - now mostly renovated - traditional areas are fully described in this guide.
Today, however, most climbers associate the Chiemgau with the sunny rocks of the Achental , such as the Zellerwand , the Pleitewandl or the beautiful, simple Auerwandl. But since the first edition of this guide at the latest, many have known that there are also attractive climbing gardens around Ruhpolding and Inzell and above Aschau, on the side rocks of the Kampenwand . However, because the Bavarian Alps east of the Chiemgau are far from over, this guide also includes the sport climbing areas around Berchtesgaden. The home climbing garden of Huberbuam, Karlstein near Bad Reichenhall, is the largest of these - there are also some smaller and less well-known climbing opportunities at the foot of the Watzmann.
In this new 3nd edition, the author Markus Stadler has brought the partly dynamic development of the sport climbing areas up to date with the active participation of many locals. A lot was developed on the Kaltwasserl and in Klobenstein, and the number of routes there more than doubled. A lot has happened on many other rocks. The summer area Burgauer Wand near Oberwössen has been added.
The climbing guide Bavarian Alps Volume 1 - Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden including Kampenwand is part of a three-volume series. Volume 2 describes the climbing areas Out of Rosenheim & Kufstein and Volume 3 describes the region from Bayrischzell to Benediktbeuern.
