In the seemingly endless forests between Landau, Pirmasens and the French border you will find the most important German sandstone climbing area after the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. And one of the most beautiful on top of that. The overall offer is simple: a picturesque landscape with medieval castles, a varied gastronomy with delicious regional cuisine and good wine, and an almost unmanageable number of climbing opportunities.
The red sandstone offers a large variety of forms: Herbe crack lines can be found here as well as wonderfully structured honeycomb walls or smooth friction plates. But the Palatinate is also a very traditional climbing area, you can tell immediately, if you are at the entrance: There are fewer hooks (respectively rings), as it is used, for example, from Franconia.
In terms of safety, so the self-sufficient is in demand: wedges and cams are mandatory accessories in the Palatinate on the harness. Who gets involved, is rewarded with fantastically beautiful climbing, and by the way: The Saumagen tastes much better than his name sounds - really delicious even!
