West Virginia's New River Gorge is one of the most dramatic canyons in the East. It is known for white water rafting, BASE jumping from "Bridge Day" and of course its world class rock climbing. Climbing in the New River Gorge is a unique combination of excellent climbing and historical traditions.
Unlike the neighboring Red River Gorge in Kentucky, New is an equal attraction for both traditional and sport climbers. No surprise - the local sandstone is harder than granite and the local joints are excellent. The local specialty is technical climbing, which will test your ingenuity, footwork and toe strength, but there are plenty of overhanging sectors for those who just want big holds and pulls.
Part Two documents climbing north of the New Main Gorge with over 1,400 rock routes along the Meadow and Gauley Rivers and around Summersville Lake. Many of the rocks here are near swimming pools, making them popular for summer climbing. Coliseum by the lake is probably the most sought-after area for hardiers in the entire region, and as of 2021 it now boasts the toughest sport climb in the East. Just a short distance away is Orange Oswald, probably the most popular 5.10 sports sector in New. And the sheer, psychedelic cliffs of Meadow must be seen to be believed.
