The Shawangunks - "Gunks" to most of us - is one of the oldest climbing areas in the US, dating back to the 1930s. Located 80 miles north of New York City, it has long been a focal point of rock climbing culture and remains a traditional climber's paradise.

There is no shortage of very difficult routes that will challenge the best climbers, but Gunks is even better known for its incredible easier climbs. You can spend several seasons exploring crevices, walls, overhangs and nooks made for climbing without ever daring to go above grade 5.7!

Multi-length routes are numerous and a modified cart path at the foot of the rocks allows for easy walks even to the farthest ends. This full color guide represents the "next generation" of Gunks guides. It covers over 600 routes on two main faces: Trapps and Near Trapps.

Photos from the base of the wall give you a quick orientation on the ground, and high-resolution aerial photos show key locations along the way.
